Crimson Division models include a red COA booklet. In 2012, the Crimson Division was opened for particularly ornate and artistic models. In 2006/2007, the Custom Shop was renamed as simply Gibson Custom. These continued using the old style logo after Nashville moved to the new one in 2007.Ĭertificates of authenticity were not issued until 2000, but 1990s Custom Shop models have a red warranty card, easily distinguished from the blue Gibson USA warranty card. Gibson CS-356 VOS, Ebony - Custom Shop Demo HighlightsModifications: Back of headstock stamped 'DEMO'Noted Cosmetic Defect(s): Finish Top: Slightly inconsistent VOS finish, Small blemishes around the bass side 'f' hole, Light scratches near the controls. Luckily for us, this is kept simple as only one SG model was ever made in Memphis, and that was the EDS-1275 from 2006-2013. Another thing that confuses many is the fact that Gibsons built in the Memphis factory also have a "Gibson Custom Shop" decal, even though the Memphis factory is not really a custom shop, and more akin to the Nashville USA line. In a similar style to the actual Custom Shop decal (only used on non-Historic models), Gibson also put a "Limited Edition" decal on limited runs from the USA line during the 1990s. With these decals, "Custom Shop Edition" denotes a limited run, while "Custom Shop Original" denotes a custom order. From as early as 1982, Gibson put a "Custom Shop" decal on the back of the headstock of any limited run or custom order guitar. There is a lot of confusion over what was and was not built by the Custom Shop because of various logos used on the back of headstocks bearing the word "Custom".

The division of the Custom Shop that builds one-off custom orders was originally called the Pro Shop, and in 2014 was rebranded as Gibson's Made 2 Measure program. For that reason, this wiki only refers to the redesigned versions as "Historic", but not the SG Customs built from 1993-1999. Prior to that, the SG Custom was still based on the USA line '61 Reissue, despite being part of the Historic Collection at the time. In 2000, the Custom Shop redesigned the SG Custom from the ground-up for improved historical accuracy, and added new Historic versions of the Standard and Special as well.

One exception to this is SG Customs built from 1993-1994 which still used the USA serial number format.

Generally, Historic models will have impressed serial numbers with 6 digits, whereas most other Custom Shop builds use an ink-stamped serial number with a "CS" prefix and a Custom Shop decal (Historics have no decal). In addition to the Historic Collection (a line of reissues built to a higher standard of historical accuracy), the Custom Shop also sometimes builds versions of USA line guitars with unique features not available in regular production (although this has become less common since the introduction of the Historic Collection). Inside the Nashville factory, a separate division was created, where Gibson's most experienced builders would build unique models in smaller numbers than the regular USA production line. However, as long as Gibson existed, they had been making custom ordered one-offs for customers (more on pre-Custom Shop custom orders here). The Gibson Custom, Art & Historic Division was formally created as a standalone operation in October 1993, after the first Historic Les Paul Reissue was introduced earlier that year.
